Real Madrid coach Manuel Pellegrini has looked to play down rumours of rifts within los Merengues' dressing room in his pre-match press conference.

The Chilean trainer has left out Kaka from his 18-man squad to face Real Valladolid on Sunday, with the official line stating that he has picked up a thigh injury.

Ivorian striker Didier Drogba has been crowned African Footballer of the Year for the second time in his career.

Drogba, previously decorated in 2006, brushed aside stiff opposition from Cameroonian forward Samuel Eto’o Fils and Ghanaian midfielder Michael Essien to claim the coveted prize.

David Beckham hailed Wayne Rooney as one of the best players in the world after he fired Manchester United into the Champions League quarter-finals.

The England striker scored twice, as he did in the first leg, as United beat AC Milan 4-0 to seal a 7-2 aggregate win.
