Political Stories

Outspoken social commentator and Editor-in-Chief of the Insight Newspaper, Mr. Kwesi Pratt, on Monday, August 30th, descended strongly on some members of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) describing them as egocentric.

Mr. Pratt, who was speaking on Citi FM, claimed there is an intense “internal insurgency” within the NDC, and alleged that some of its activists were deliberating doing so because they do not want President Mills’ administration to succeed, but wants the party to end up in opposition.

The ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) has not yet opened nominations for who gets elected to lead the Party for the 2012 general elections, but the Daily Guide newspaper reports that various schemers in the Party are employing different tactics to position themselves to boost their chances to oust President Atta Mills from the race.

Reports monitored on Adom FM yesterday gave indications that one of such strategic moves was unveiled in Anyinam in the Atiwa constituency of the Eastern Region on Sunday during a rally to end campaigning for today’s by-election.

Abdul Malik Kwaku Baako, Editor-In-Chief of the New Crusading Guide, believes Mr. Alan Kyerematen should not have contested in the on-going NPP primaries to elect a flagbearer.

According to him, Alan should have counted himself out of 2012 because incumbency was on Nana Addo’s side.

He advised Mr. Kyerematen to rather consider himself as the future leader of the NPP.

Speaking on JoyFM’s Newsfile, Mr. Baako explained if there was any individual who could attract floating voters, then it was certainly Nana Addo, because of the 49% votes he secured in the first round during the 2008 elections.

Mr. Baako, in asmuch as Nana Addo is a staunch member of the Dankwah tradition and has proven track records attesting to it, should he win today’s elections and lose to President Mills in the 2012 General Elections, it would be difficult for him to be considered by the party as their flagbearer again.

New Patriotic Party Communications Director, Kwaku Kwarteng has told Joy FM that the wording of who qualifies to vote as spelt out by the party’s constitution was responsible for the inability of Nana Addo-Dankwa Akufo-Addo to vote in the ongoing exercise to elect a flag-bearer.

He said while the constitution provides that a flag-bearer and his running mate are eligible to vote, it was not clear if it is talking about 'a past' flag-bearer.

Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, a leading contender for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flag-bearership position says he deserves another chance to lead the party in 2012.

He stated on Angel Fm, a Kumasi radio station on Thursday that after performing so well in the 2008 elections, it is only fair and appropriate for NPP delegates to give him another chance when they elect a flag bearer at today's historic congress.

He said judging from his feat in 2008 as a first-time presidential contestant, he would certainly wrestle power from the ruling National Democratic Congress in 2012.
