Upper-East Region commends Dr. Awoornor-Williams

A number of people in the Upper East Region have commended the Regional Director of Health Services, Dr. John Koku Awoonor-Williams for his innovative leadership style, which had facilitated infrastructural development in the health sector.

A random sampling of views by the Ghana News Agency on Friday attracted praises for Dr Awoonor-Williams, who assumed duty in the Region, two years ago.

Two Mamprusi traders killed

Two Mamprusi traders from Bawku have been killed by unidentified assailants at Garu Tempane in what the police initial report indicate is armed robbery.

Chief Superintendent Kwaku Boadu Peprah, Bawku Divisional Police Commander, who confirmed the incident to Joy FM on Saturday, said the murderers left behind two unregistered motorbikes.

Government urged to strengthen local government structures

The government has been urged to ensure that there is genuine transfer of power to the local government structures to enhance administrative functions for improved decentralisation process.

Mr. Rudolf Amenga-Etego, Executive Director of the Foundation for Grassroots Initiatives in Africa (GrassRootsAfrica), stated this in an interview with the GNA in Bolgatanga on Friday.

Smuggling of fuel hits Upper East again

Mark Worlanyo. Photo: myjoyonline.com Fuel smuggling is reported to be on the ascendency in the Upper East Region despite a ban on the sale of the product in large quantities after 9:00 pm.

Regional Minister, Mark Wayongo who is also the Chairman of the Regional Security Council placed the ban following continued smuggling-induced shortage of fuel in the region.

New road safety policy soon

A new policy to enhance discipline and safety on the country's roads is to be rolled out soon as part of efforts to reduce vehicular accidents and related deaths and injury.

The policy encourages shared responsibilities for road sector managers including the Ghana Police Service, the Road Safety Commission, and the various Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies and other relevant agencies.
