Greater Accra News

The Homowo celebrations at Achiaman, a suburb of Amasaman in the Ga West Municipality of the Greater Accra Region, turned bloody when two factions in a chieftaincy dispute in the area took to stones and machetes to settle scores.

Nine people including one of the chiefs, Nii Achia Ankomah II, sustained various degrees of injury.

An eyewitness who spoke to the Daily Graphic on condition of anonymity said fighting between the feuding parties broke out when Nii Kwartey Adjan II, the other chief in the dispute, started sprinkling Kpoikpoi in the community, contrary to a directive from the police that activities to mark the Homowo celebrations be held indoors.

Conflict has again reared its ugly head in the Osu Traditional Area following allegations that a faction in the chieftaincy dispute had ‘stolen’ the war god of the Kinkawe Division and taken it to an unknown destination.

The event created a chaotic situation in the community last Saturday, with angry youth vandalising property in one of the royal houses.

The police, however, reacted swiftly by firing tear gas to disperse the mob and succeeded in arresting six people suspected to be involved in the violence.

Credit: DAILY GUIDEAn internet fraud-related murder, contemptuously referred to as ‘sakawa’, struck Nima, leaving residents puzzled about what could have triggered the cold-blooded crime. Gado Dagbani, 32, suspected to be a patron of sakawa, was killed by yet-to-be identified assailants said to be accomplices in the internet fraud crime, who came to his room at about 1am on Monday.

Nima Divisional Police Commander, Chief Superintendent Timothy Yoosa Bonga, said a certain Mustapha Mohammed, who lodged a complaint at the police station, indicated that the deceased lived in the same apartment with his younger brother, Alhassan Dagbani, 27, at a portion of Nima called ‘You Too Can Fly’.

The Head of Drainage at the Ministry of Water Resources, Works and Housing, Wise Ametefe, has said the courts are partly to be blamed for the persistent floods in Accra during the raining season.
