The Chartered Institute of Bankers (CIB), on Monday organized a four-day workshop in Accra, on letters of credit, to build the capacity of bankers and stakeholders in the oil and gas industry.

The workshop is to ensure that participants are ready to take delivery of oil and to transact business in an efficient manner.

Mr Clifford Mettle, Vice President of CIB, told the Ghana News Agency that the module for the workshop, which is expected to serve as a readiness strategy, would make room for the detail discussion of topics that include international trade, details of letters of credit and price fluctuation clauses and its related risks.

The one-time premium payment under the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) becomes operational from January next year in fulfillment of one of the key pledges of the government.

To achieve that, a review of Act 650 to give legal effect to the one-time premium is currently before Cabinet and will soon be put before Parliament.

The Chief Executive Officer of the NHIA, Mr Sylvester Mensah, made this known at the launch of the sixth edition of the Standard Treatment Guidelines (STGs) and Essential Medicine List in Accra yesterday.

Twenty Six commercial banks will Saturday vie for the coveted Bank of the Year at the 2009 Ghana Banking Awards.

The event put together by Corporate Initiative Ghana (CIG) has become the reference point for assessing the performance of the banks.

But there will be 15 other categories including; Best Growing Bank and Best in Product Innovation.

A survey by the Centre for Democratic Development, Ghana (CDD-Ghana) has seriously indicted officials of the Ghana Education Service (GES), especially head teachers, for leaks in the disbursement and utilisation of the Capitation Grant, thereby defeating the purpose for which the grant was introduced.

The survey exposed the deliberate inflation of enrolment figures by the said officials and delays in the release of the funds, some as late as three years, with an average misappropriation of GH¢600 per school in a year.

After barely four years in operation, First National Savings and Loans (FNSL) has gone nationwide, and in the process succeeded in opening 30 branches throughout the country.

This has been achieved within the relatively short period because of FNSL's efficient and c1ose-to-client banking for the ordinary person and its excellent customer service, and the larger dream of creating wealth for stakeholders.

With its broader people centred outlook, the company has over the four-year period managed to largely meet its target of covering many average Ghanaians' within the lower income bracket.
