NPP to develop Ghana with $22b
The ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) has projected to commit $22 billion into the development of Ghana over the next four years when re-elected.
Dr. Arthur Kennedy, Head of the Communications Committee of the Nana Addo Campaign team, disclosed this on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show on Tuesday.
“Conservative estimate has it that our agenda over the next four years will cost about 22 billion dollars; and we are very close to dotting the I’s and crossing all the T’s about funding,” he stressed.
He said as the economy expanded, there would be more revenues coming into government’s coffers to meet such a projection.
According to him, the government had over the past seven years significantly improved the economy increasing growth growth from 3.5% to 7%, adding that “we can take it to about 10 or 11%.”
In achieving their targets, he explained, the NPP also hopes to raise funds through bonds, oil revenue and win donors confidence to brighten the government’s chances of borrowing more.
The party is expected to launch its manifesto for the 2008 Presidential and Parliamentary elections at the Centre for National Culture, Kumasi this morning, September 23, 2008.
The 73-page Manifesto, entitled “Moving Ghana Forward - Building a Modern Ghana,” is expected to expand on the vision of the NPP’s Presidential Candidate, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
The vision captures four thematic areas: The continuing consolidation of Ghana’s democracy; the modernisation of Ghana; the structural transformation of the Ghanaian economy, and the full engagement of the nation in the process of regional and continental integration.
Dr. Arthur Kennedy said Nana Addo would highlight and explain how the contents of the manifesto would be delivered, aimed at “making Ghana a first class successful African country where you can see things functioning like you see in most of the modern countries”.
He said since time immemorial, 70% of Ghana’s export earning has come from exporting primary products, “We think that we need to reverse that ratio so that 70% can come from valued added products, manufacturing and other things.”
Touching on good governance, he said: “Nana Addo expects to be a very activist president who would be hands on to demand more accountability from his followers, strengthening institutions that will fight corruption, demand quicker service to public from governing agencies.”
Dr. Arthur Kennedy announced that the party intends to establish a Constitutional Review Commission to address some weaknesses in the constitution.
