Media magnate, businessman and recent politician, Nana Kofi Coomson of General Portfolios, publishers of the Chronicle group of newspapers, has decided to throw his weight behind New Patriotic Party presidential candidate, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s bid for the presidency.

Kofi, as the highly-held investigative journalist is known by the media, told Myjoyonline on Monday evening he has decided to shelve his ambition to go to parliament in order to support Nana Addo win a first-round victory in December.

Nana Kofi Coomson had desired to contest the Western Region’s Effia-Kwesimintsim Constituency parliamentary seat in December on the ticket of the ruling NPP, however, he was denied even a primary showdown with incumbent Joe Baidoe-Ansah, on technical grounds.

Party officials held (amidst disagreements on what party regulations provide) that he had organized his campaign for his parliamentary ambitions on official party letterheads without due authorization and refused to list him as a candidate for the Effia-Kwesimintsim primary.

Police investigations could not establish any ill findings against him, while his protestations yielded naught. Asked over the phone if he indeed had gone independent of the party, he denied the allegation, rife in the Ghanaian media and described it as “mere speculation. If they had made the effort to speak to me, they would have known the truth.”

“It is my constituents whose interest I desire to serve. They have much say now and they are the people asking me to go independent but I have done a lot of consultations and I think for now, I want to do what I can to help Nana Addo make it a one touch.”

“I can put all that behind me and hope that the constituents who genuinely supported me are not marginalized in the party. They feel that I have been dealt a raw deal after four years (of hard work) and I think I owe them a duty to fight for them, and that is why I will support Nana’s campaign for a one touch win. Unity of the party is paramount,” he said.
