Komla Dumor, a Ghanaian broadcaster currently working with the African Service of the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), has been transferred to the World Service of the corporation.

Komla, a previous winner of the prestigious Ghana Journalist of the Year Award, is expected to join the crack team of presenters of The World Today, the flagship programme of the BBC.

The new appointment takes effect from September 1, 2008. An orientation and training programme for him begins today.

In an interview with the Daily Graphic in Accra last Friday, just before he flew back to his base in London after a two-week holiday, Komla said, “It’s a great honour to work alongside some of the great presenters at the World Service. This is a great opportunity to present a programme that covers the globe. I am proud and excited about it.”

According to Komla, his elevation placed a greater responsibility on him because at the African Service, there were just 25 million listeners across the continent, but with his new schedule, The World Today, there were about 100 million listeners around the world.

The programme covers issues about the Middle East, Asia, South America, the United States of America and Europe.

As a result of this new responsibility, Komla said he had to understand the depth of issues and know the subject under discussion, as well as have a grasp of many issues, especially the politics of the European Union.

According to him, he would work hard to justify the confidence his employers had reposed in him by shifting him to the prestigious World Service programme.

Komla holds Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Ghana and a Masters in Public Administration from Havard University’s Kennedy School of Government.

Until he joined the BBC, he was the Operations Manager of the Multimedia Broadcasting Company. He was also the host of the Super Morning Show on Joy FM.
