Work has begun on the construction of a-seven million dollar project to fence off the catchment area of River Densu, the main source of water supply to the Weija dam and to ward off developers from encroaching the land.

The project will involve the building of concrete walls to the height of about 1.8 metres which will be fitted with wire netting at the top to prevent people from access to the banks.

The walls protecting the lake will be at least one kilometre square from the bank to safeguard the source of water supply to the Accra Metropolis.

At a short ceremony to mark the commencement of work, Mr. Cobbie Kessie, Managing Director of the Ghana Water Company Limited appealed to the communities along the banks and catchment areas of the Weija dam not to impede the contractors’ work but to ensure that peace prevail to enable them to complete the task on time.

He said it was important to protect the huge investment that had gone into building the Weija Dam and to also ensure that water was available all year round to meet the needs of the population.

Mr Kessie urged all to eschew parochial interest and instead pursue acts that promoted the national interest.

He appealed to the contractor to ensure that most of the youth in the communities along the banks of the river are employed on the project.

Mr Joe Akyeampong, Director, CST Limited, contractors working on the project, pledged their readiness to deliver quality job within the specified period of the project.

The 51-kilometre project will go through Manhean, Ayika Dobro, Domeabra, Amanfro, Gbawe and Weija.

Nii Ankan Dobro II, Chief of Ankan Dobro, the community from where the project has commenced said the community was ready to collaborate with the contractor to fast-track the work.

He said his people would not disturb the peace since government had in 2002 alerted them about the project.
