Azumah blasts GBA
The Public Relations Directorate of the Azumah Nelson Foundation has lashed back at the Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA) for condemning the Azumah-Fenech fight.
Over the weekend, the GBA held a press conference during which its boss, Moses Foh-Amoaning stressed that his outfit was not informed about the fight, and that Azumah should have renewed his licence before engaging Fenech in a 10-round contest today.
But Deputy Public Affairs Director of the Azumah Nelson Foundation, Ahene-Truly said: “Azumah does not even have a GBA licence, let alone renew it. When he was the world champion decades ago, he didn’t have a GBA licence.”
According him, Azumah did not need a GBA licence to fight in Australia because the athletics commission of that country would give him one when he got there.
The PRO, who called into the offices of DAILY GUIDE to react to yesterday’s back-page story, headlined, ‘GBA Condemns Azumah’, disclosed, “Nobody in Australia recognizes a GBA licence. You only need the licence in Commonwealth Championships. So what they are saying is neither here nor there!
“Joshua Clottey, for instance does not carry a GBA licence with all his fights in the USA. He only needs that of the athletics commission of each state he fights in,” he added.
Ahene-Truly advised the GBA to “concentrate on lifting up the sport which has witnessed a decline in recent years instead of wasting time and resources on petty irrelevant issues”.
He maintained that Azumah Nelson, a former featherweight champion of the world, had trained for the Fenech fight and was ready for it.
“If all goes well with this fight, Azumah will next engage Hugo Caesar Chavez, the legendary Mexican all in an effort to regenerate the interest that characterized the sport sometime ago.”
