Agbeko defends title
Reigning International Boxing Federation (IBF) Champion, Joseph Agbeko left Accra this week for Europe to prepare for his fight, which is a mandatory Bantamweight title defence against William Gonzales.
Expectedly Agbeko alias King Kong held a press conference prior to his departure.
The press conference was attended by dignitaries including Kenneth Ashigbey, Managing Director of Optimum Media Prime (OMP), and Moses Foh-Amoaning, Chairman of the Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA).
Speaking to the media at the Metro TV premises last Wednesday, Mr. Ashigbey said the function was to inform the press about the IBF Bantamweight fight between Agbeko and Gonzales which will be held at the 02 Arena in the United Kingdom on July 12, 2008.
He disclosed that plans were underway to beam the fight live to Ghanaians as OMP had the syndication of sports rights. “We are the Public Relations Managers for Agbeko and we will ensure the fight comes live.”
According to Agbeko, he was happy to be given the opportunity to defend his title despite his long layoff of about nine months.
He believed he was in top shape to defend his belt. “I am going to bring back the title to show my form”.
Agbeko who stated that he was all along training when he was in the United States of America under the eagle eyes of his trainer B. Bruce, said he did not really know his challenger as he only watched 30 seconds of Gonzales’s fight in which he knocked down his opponent.
Chairman of the GBA asked for massive support for Agbeko, whom he described as the current flagbearer of Ghana boxing. According to him, in boxing only one man carries the nation compared to football where eleven men represent Ghana. He expressed the hope that with the likes of Joshua Clottey who would mount the ring in August this year, and Raymond Narh, Ghana would soon produce more world champions.
He revealed that the GBA’s duty was to issue licenses to promoters but would not actively promote fights.
Mr. Foh-Amoaning added that TIGO, the communications network that presented GH¢2,500 to the GBA, would be given some equipment to brand Ghana Boxing which was the beginning of bigger things to come Joseph Agbeko, who won the IBF Bantamweight title in 2007, has a record of 26 fights, 25 wins with 22 knock-outs and one defeat.
His opponent William Gonzales had 23 fights 21 wins, 18 knockouts and 2 defeats.
