Guido was a great friend and work mate since 1998 when we met in Ghanaclassifieds. We connected on our first meet and became good friends. I learned a lot from Guido in understanding the technology world and we both were convinced that we could make great changes in this world with or without college education.

Two years on, we were close and Guido taught me one thing, if he decides to do something he would get it done, sleep not withstanding. One habit I soon took to. We worked on getting one of the largest Banks in Ghana, SSB now SG SSB online and introduced them to the need to move their banking online.

Guido was so committed to the project and got such a good work done, when we first made the test presentation to the bank management, they were so excited and made payment right away on their SSB Sika card.

I have being with Guido through the thick and thin, he had such a strong intellectual ability to argue issues and I always enjoyed doing great intellectual exchanges with him from the real world into virtual space and back. Sometimes the exchanges would degenerate a bit into personal elements but when we met physically afterwards we would apologies to each other and continue as great friends of old - a sense of maturity rarely seen.

The only way to defeat Guido is intellectually but he would come back again and again and so was his code writing that the Sema Code he developed is recognized today globally. I had being exploring a base to carry my African vision and Kenya kept calling to me and not too long Guido came along under the auspices of Microsoft Platform and Strategy Manager.

After a couple of meets, he insisted I come and share his house with him so I finally decided to stay close to a brother but he never told me he was leaving to eternity that soon.

Guido, you have fought a good fight of faith and you would be remembered for your “strong intellectual depth”.

Rest in absolute peace.

I’m shocked, i’m just seeing this and i’m in total shock, I remember just like yesterday when Guido helped me compile my first linux kernel and got me set on the way to an IT career. I just can’t believe this.

We worked together in Software Development at CoreNett Ltd. Did not have enough patience for each other, but my respect for him as an ace programmer was profound. Ghana has really lost a software genius.

It comes as a shock to me and i believe to many. I met Guido two years back in Nairobi and what an amazing guy he was. Truly, he was one of the best minds we have had in Africa.

May his soul rest in peace.

Guido Rest in Peace

Farewell Brother

I have known this brilliance of an idea for far too long to accept that he is finally not coming back. Back in WebSoft (The Web Division of SOFT) he would disappear for two weeks and resurface with the latest computer languages to show off. No, Guido is not gone, he can easily be seen around, the people he mentored (me), the minds he challenged (of cause he would never accept the status quo) and definitely the ladies he charmed.
You will for ever be where the greats are… just don’t go challenging Einstein about his E=MC² theory

A star in the skies that where you belong

I am really sad to hear this news. We saw Guido emerge from GIS into a leader in the field. Heartfelt condolences to all his family, friends and colleagues.
Rest in Peace, Guido.

A great Ghanaian software mind is gone. What shocking nbews.

May Guido rest in peace.

This is a real shock to me,
I met Guido in Nairobi at IDLELO2 and he was an amazing fellow, He was such a supportive guy to the Linuxchix Africa group and gave us constructive criticism.

He helped me out with a PHP problem on the LUG list…

Oh my God its a pity what a nice person we’ve lost.

Africa has lost a real Innovative, sophisticated gentleman.

May his soul rest in eternal peace!

Africa has lost such a brilliant man. I met Guido in Namibia during the first ever africa source workshop and helped alot with the with the programming problem.

GUIDO’s ROUTINELY INQUIRING MIND IS GONE!

A loss of indescribable magnitude in significance.

A reasoning so structured and analytical; an exposition delivered in crystal-clear transparency, a presentation ever so elegant; all were Guido’s characteristic hallmarks.

It remains to be seen whether a figure with a fluidity of thought, passion for innovation, and a commitment to creativity comparable to his emerges.

All leading ONE to think:

g is gone; G (His influence!) remains!

An awesome loss;

His towering achievements to celebrate And strive to emulate
Is the great challenge!

Ghana has lost an iconic figure in our software technology industry. Guido, rest in peace.

Darn I am so sad to hear about this and at so young of an age ! I had never met Guido in person as I came to Newsvine after he left, but I had heard about him many time before and almost got a chance to met him when he was a major part of the World Summit for Information Society in Geneva in December of 2003, however I could not make the trip. I hoped one day to met him.
Guido was one of the most respect members of the Newsvine, com (owned by MSNBC) site and many were very shocked to also find this tragic new this morning. We have a small gathering of his friends saying their goodbyes also. I only wish I could have had the honour of also meeting Guido,
Here is our article to our brother also.

Peace be with you Guido.

From all at APC… condolences to all Guido’s friends, family, and colleagues. I feel honoured to have known him.

Guido did not only want to make a difference. He did make a difference.

Oh yes, we had our share of arguments but I know for sure that the world has really lost a great mind.

Rest in perfect peace, bro!

Guido, you were that troublesome boy at school sending repeated valentine cards. Then you were that troubelsome software developer helping BusyInternet stay on top of its technologies…nothing that drives BusyInternet has not been touched by you and we are confused by your loss. Was so excited to talk to you not so long ago about your success in Kenya, your lovely house…so sad not to be at the office when you popped in two weeks ago. Everyone says you looked great and happy! Thanks for passing by. Our sincere love and support to your family, especially from me to Estelle (the 3rd GIS Estelle).

Very sad news. Heartfelt condolences to his family and friends.

This has come as awful news and left me in a wretched state. Rest in peace Guido. Although I am Sandra’s contemporary, I got to know Guido from a very young age in Labone when I was a regular visitor to his house. We would enjoy games such as hide and seek, catch-me-if-you-can, climbing trees, hunting tadpoles etc. Guido had a great sense of humour and loved to tease me expecially about my fondness for his sisters! :) One thing about Guido that I really respected was his independent mind. He questionned everything and accepted no idea without intense analysis - a feature of many a great intellect in history. He was very much a free thinker a feature not unrelated to his passion for free, open source s/w. At GIS he was an extremely bright student tending to come at the top of his class. A just reward for this was a place at Princeton. His personality and intellect were so powerful that he will live on in the minds of many who knew him as well as in cyberspace. Guido - you will never die!

This news is very shocking. Ms. Dorothy Gordon and I talked about Guido at Kuala Lumpur, when she shared about this very devastating news. I believe Guido Sohne was not only a champion of open philosophy coupled with brilliant mind, he was also an inspiration to people in Asia. Our heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and network of supporters from India. Jaya
