NSC outdoors new sport
The Chief Administrative Officer of the National Sports Council (NSC), James Charles Aryeh yesterday unveiled the Ghana Pool Association (GPA), making it the 35th association under the council.
In a speech read for him by Mr. Aryeh, the Chief Executive Officer of the NSC, Prince Oduro-Mensah said his outfit was approached by a group of young men two years ago with the aim of forming an association to govern the growth and development of a sport which was gaining popularity among Ghanaians.
“I recommended their efforts at forming the Ghana Pool Association and I was glad to be part of the launch,” he said.
He indicated that the GPA was formed to govern and promote the development of cue sports, namely eight-ball, nine- ball, snooker and others, maintaining that the NSC deemed it fit to “encourage another important step towards the fulfillment of our mandate and offering the Ghanaian populace alternative sports disciplines to participate in.
“We hope to see a vibrant association thriving in all 10 regions of the country,” he noted.
Mr Aryeh swore-in the GPA executive members including Papa Arkhurst, the President; Lasisi Tayo Jnr, Vice-President; Andrew Sackey, Secretary; Dr. Archie Addo, Technical Advisor; Delali Nkulenu and Michael Aikins, Financial Secretary and Technical Director respectively.
On behalf of the NSC, Mr. Aryeh declared the GPA duly launched.
Mr Papa Arkhurst, who thanked the NSC for making GPA a part of its member-associations, said the group had come to stay.
He gave the assurance that not only will his outfit conduct some workshops for sports journalists to be abreast of the rules and regulations of the game, they will also form more GPA clubs in Accra to engage in the serious promotion of the game because it was a rapidly growing sport.
