The infamous poster with the face of Bafana Bafana striker Benni McCarthy on the background of the old Apartheid flag will be further investigated by the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations Local Organising Committee.
The poster was found in the streets of Kumasi with McCarthy’s face upon the old South African flag and the official MTN emblem.
The mobile network has denied any involvement in the printing of the controversial poster and SAFA Director of Communications Morio Sanyane has confirmed to Football365 that all parties have been made aware about the embarrassment.
“The best we could do was to communicate our message to the South African High Commission and the 2008 Ghana Local Organising Committee because they are responsible for dealing with the matter,” Sanyane told F365.
“We have brought it to their attention and we’ve even sent them the pictures.
“We’ve also contacted the sponsors, MTN who have also raised a concern. They requested the relevant people to investigate the matter further on their side.
“We await feedback and we hope to hear from the High Commission, however since it’s a football matter we might have to wait to hear from the LOC in Ghana,” he said.
McCarthy was left out of coach Carlos Alberto Parreira’s squad under a cloud of speculation with no definite reason given for his absence after extensive efforts were made in 2007 to bring the Blackburn Rovers forward back into the international arena.
