John Legend, Soul of Africa concert
Loading ...American R & B Singer, John Legend, five times Grammy Award winner and one of the most influential figures in contemporary music, is coming to Ghana to headline the event dubbed Soul of Africa concert next Saturday, October 27.
The concert is in aid of the victims of the floods in Northern Ghana and the campaign to eradicate guinea worm, the dilapidating water-borne disease.
John Legend will be in Ghana with his 25 piece band to perform at Accra’s Independence Square, to an estimated audience of half a million people.
The marathon concert will also feature the Jamaican, Luciano (Jah Messenjah), other international reggae stars, Osibisa, the legendary Afro rockers and the cream of African talent led by Reggie Rockstone, Obrafuor and Tinny, Ghana’s hip life stars.
“This is a great gesture of solidarity with Africa’s poor,” said Dr. Kwesi Owusu, the concert organiser from Creative Storm, a campaigning media house.
“Over 400,000 people have been displaced by the floods in Northern Ghana, whole village and farms washed away with the real threat of famine in the coming months.
“The concert is a rally call and a timely response. “We are looking at a major disaster in the months to come,” said Benonita Bismarck of the Ghana Red Cross.
The Soul of Africa concert is supported by an international SMS campaign to raise funds for health emergencies following the floods, including the purchase of water pipe filters for the guinea worm eradication campaign.
John Legend will visit the affected areas and dedicate his performance to the relief effort supported by all the major UN aid agencies working in Ghana.
