“Porn” in Ghana?
Loading ...Pornography is still considered to be alien to our culture though it has been widely accepted and tolerated in the western world.
The internet has provided an effective medium for the distribution of porn and this industry is now a multi billion industry. Perhaps this is the motivating factor that has encouraged certain Ghanaians to join the porn industry.
The last time this subject became a topical issue in Ghana was when it was discovered that a dating site [hems.com] had pictures of several nude Ghanaian girls on their website. After massive condemnation, the operators of the site were forced to take off those inappropriate pictures. Later it was discovered that most of the girls where from the Swedru – Oda area.
Another website – wakikient.com has popped up claiming to be the first Ghanaian porn site. The first porn production – Esewani I (Adventures of Wapipi Jay) they claim was shot in Los Angeles and New York. After watching the sample videos, it is plausible that it was shot in Ghana.
The DVD will be available to purchase by Tuesday December 19, 2006.An attempt to contact the operators of this website to find out their agents in Ghana or in the US drew a blank. A Whois check on the domain name only listed the details of the host provider. I have not been able to make contact with wakikent.com for their comments.
Reactions from Ghanaians who have seen the site both home and abroad were varied. Whiles most of them condemned the website, a minority applauded the pioneering effort.
One might be amazed at the number of girls doing porn in Ghana. Another website – blacksensations.com had over 50 amateur girls from Africa and out of this number, more than ten girls were Ghanaian girls.
Other checks with porn recruiting agencies revealed that African porn stars could earn up to $250,000 a year. Some claim to pay over $25,000 upfront when you are accepted as a performer and also pay all travel and accommodation expenses.
As rosy as this may seem, some African girls are virtually abused and short changed. A girl called Ivy purported to be a Ghanaian on ghettogaggers.com is alledged to have attempted suicide after she realized that the video was on the internet. Other girls earn a smaller percentage compared to what the middle men “pimps” earn.
It appears there is a booming porn industry in Ghana which is been managed underground. It’s up to us as a country to accept and properly regulate the industry or condemn it since it has no place in our culture.
Maybe one day, history will remember Wapipi Jay and his girls as the pioneers of porn in Ghana, maybe not.
